This wooden spiral staircase was added to the 1828 Administration Building at Western State Hospital in 1840, the same year notable superintendent Francis T. Stribling was appointed to run the Staunton, VA asylum. Now, over 170 years later, it’s holding up wonderfully; it can easily hold several people without shifting, and leads out onto a wonderful porch surrounding the cupola. They sure don’t build ‘em like they used to!
Unlimited edition prints are available here; the limited edition sold out in 2013.
